  • What is the “Bring the Books” project?   (back to top)

“Bring the Books” is a calling to help meet needs of our brothers and sisters in rural China. The inspiration for the project comes from 2 Timothy 4:13 where Paul, writing from the isolation of prison, asks Timothy to bring “the cloak …., also the books, and above all the parchments”, which were his coat, books and probably the Word. The things Paul needed addressed body, mind and soul. In this way, we at the Bring the Books project want to address these same needs of Christians in rural China. It also imitates Jesus who often met both the physical and spiritual needs of the people to whom he ministered.

  • Who are these ‘brothers and sisters’ in rural China?   (back to top)

We are targeting three specific groups:
    1. To children in Orphanages we are bringing The Big Picture Story Bible which teaches children the Bible’s whole story, with colorful illustrations, so they can begin to appreciate the fulfillment of God’s promise to his people. We are also bringing blankets* or other items to address bodily needs.
    2. To graduating seminary and training school students we are bringing collections of Christian books and Bibles that will help equip them for their calling to pastor churches. We are also bringing blankets* or other items to address bodily needs.
    3. To rural churches we are bringing libraries containing Christian books and Bibles. Many rural churches have no Christian books at all. We are also bringing blankets* or other items to address bodily needs.

*The Bring the Books project seeks to address the needs of body, mind and soul. In addressing bodily needs, this includes but is not limited to providing blankets. As we identify other specific physical needs of the people, we will make appropriate changes.

  • Why can't they buy books for themselves?   (back to top)

Many of the estimated 60+ million rural Chinese believers have limited access and means to buy Christian resources. Consider these statistics:
    • Many rural believers would have difficulty accessing Christian books:
      • On average, in China there is only one Christian bookstore for every 350,000 believers….and most of these Christian bookstores are located in the larger cities.
      • On average, there is only one Christian bookstore every 18,000 sq. miles (or 46,000 sq. km, which is roughly the size of Switzerland).
      • Internet penetration is 6 times less in rural areas than urban ones.
    • Many rural believers would have difficulty affording Christian books:
      • The average income for rural Chinese is $78 per month.
    • Most rural believers, especially youth, can read:
      • Literacy rates in China exceed 95%
      • Literacy rate amongst Chinese youth (15-24 years) is 99%, according to Unicef.

  • Why are Christian Books and Bibles important?   (back to top)

    • Let this be written for a future generation, that a people not yet created may praise the LORD. Psalm 102:18
      • Books are one way that the Word of God has been passed from generation to generation.
    • And now, go, write it before them on a tablet and inscribe it in a book that it may be for the time to come as a witness forever. Isaiah 30:8
      • Books and the written Word are a means used by God to communicate truth from generation to generation.
    • Make known among the nations what he has done. 1 Chronicles 16:8
      • The Bible commands us to make God and his works famous throughout the world.

  • Do I have a responsibility to give to this need?   (back to top)

There are many needs in the world today; therefore, we each need to discern when God is prompting us to give. We believe God will touch people’s hearts to steward His resources required to complete His work.
    • If anyone has material possessions and sees his brother in need but has no pity on him, how can the love of God be in him? 1 John 3:17
      • The love of God in us compels us to share what we have with our brothers and sisters in need.
    • Suppose a brother or sister is without clothes and daily food. If one of you says to him, “Go, I wish you well; keep warm and well fed,” but does nothing about his physical needs, what good is it? In the same way, faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead. James 2:15-17
      • Giving to our brothers and sisters in need is an expression of true living faith.

  • What kinds of Christian books will be provided?   (back to top)

In addition to the Bible and The Big Picture Story Bible for Children, we are distributing Christian books covering many different topics such as theology, Christian life, devotionals, biographies, testimonies, leadership, business, marriage, parenting, children and others. All have been translated into Chinese and contextualized for this market, and include books written by such authors as John MacArthur, Oswald Sanders, Dennis Rainey, June Hunt, Gary Chapman, Max Lucado, John Newton and Franklin Graham, as well as such products as the Alpha Marriage Courses and various Awana Resources.

We believe these kinds of books will help them grow spiritually, better equip themselves, and develop a Christian worldview. Some books also clearly explain the Gospel. With the Spirit’s help, books can be a catalyst for transformation in themselves, their communities, and the country.

  • Are these Christian books and Bibles legal?   (back to top)

Yes, all the Christian books and Bibles are legal and can be distributed throughout the country without restriction. There are also non-registered Christian books in circulation within China, but they are subject to confiscation and cannot be distributed on a mass scale which is what we envision with Bring the Books.

  • Have you already begun bringing Christian books and Bibles to rural China?   (back to top)

To date, we’ve already distributed over 10,000 Christian books and Bibles, which have largely been funded by individuals, churches and societies in the US and Australia. Our hope is that we will distribute many more in 2012.

  • What can I do to help Bring the Books?   (back to top)

You, as an individual or a church, can contribute any amount of money which will help us bring more blankets, books and Bibles to rural Christians in China. Tax deductible receipts are available in the US and Canada.

For individuals, your gift of any amount can help us bring a quantity of blankets, books and Bibles to our brothers and sisters in rural China:
